On 11 April the Durham Advertiser published an article in their City & District section about our club's activities. Members can read the copy below.

40+ YEARS FOR CITY OF DURHAM PROBUS CLUB

2019 sees City of Durham Probus Club looking back over 40 successful years having been formed in 1978. Probus Clubs are independent community groups aimed at bringing together local retired professional and business people.

Created from the Rotary Club of Durham the first meeting was at The Royal County Hotel and later both the Dunelm and Palatinate Probus Clubs were absorbed into the City Club. Over the years venues have been the Masonic Hall, the Redhills Hotel, Durham Indoor Bowling Centre and currently Durham City Rugby Club.

The club meets on Monday morning at 10-00 at Durham City Rugby Club.  Full details about the club can be found on our website.

2019 also represents a new chapter in the club’s history when the club membership was extended to ladies adding to an already growing and active membership.

Unlike many other Probus Clubs, we hold weekly meetings during our terms, at which a variety of talks are given by guest speakers as well as giving the opportunity for members to socialise. Regular visits by members to various venues are also arranged throughout the year.

New members are welcome and further information about the club and its activities can be found on our website - durhamprobus.co.uk

Alternatively you can join us at one of our regular Monday morning meetings and meet members.

CHAIRMAN'S REPORT OCTOBER 2019
LADY MEMBERS
Another memorable and successful Year for our "City Of Durham Probus Club". Lady members were introduced for the first time, and at time of writing we have 8 lady members who have been an absolute delight to welcome to our club, and we look forward to increasing this new membership going forward.

WEEKLY TALKS
We are so lucky to be in the enviable position of having our weekly Talks. Our thanks must go to everybody involved in producing such a fascinating range of excellent speakers. Thank You to Cyril Palin for co-ordinating the speaker program..It is vital for the club to have a vibrant "Speaker Policy" so we can promote our weekly Talks and would ask members to help again in this respect with suggested speaker and topics etc. We had some great speakers.
We have to give a "Special Thank You " to our "Stalwart Pesident" Keith James and other Members who have given talks and stepped in when needed.
Thank You - much appreciated

OUTSIDE EVENTS
Probably one of the best years ever for outside visits, which included:
Beamish Museum, Ushaw College General Visit, Brancepeth Castle, Harrison and Harrison, Visit to Ushaw College Library and more to come!
We invited some of the "Wurlitzer Organ Committee" from Howden Le Wear to join us which went down well. John Heslop (Chairman) provided a great write up for "Facebook and their "Pipetalk Magazine" Also, "Special Thanks" to Stuart Wright for bringing his wonderful 1903 "Fairground Organ" which added great interest. and a special mention to Bert Nunn for his support -Thank You.
We have now created a new position within the club, "Events Co-ordinator" namely James Wolsey . Our special thanks must go to James for all the hard work in organising these events, "Social Intercourse" is a vital ingredient for our club to thrive and these events have achieved that purpose. So, any ideas for "Days Out" please inform James.

SPECIAL MENTION TO DON BENNETT
A Special Thank You to Don Bennett for all your dedication over the last 19 yrs in keeping the wheels turning every week with the "Technical Support" necessary for the speakers requirements etc. Thank You. The Club would not exist if it wasnt for the dedication of officers like, Don.

WEEKLY ATTENDANCES
We had another good year for attendances averaging around 40 or so members - one week I think we had 50 which was very positive'

CLUB OFFICERS
I must thank all the Club Officers for their dedication in making sure the club runs so smoothly. We are very lucky, just to "turn up" with everything done for us. We always need volunteers for various posts, so please help in this respect. Mike Firth has a list of vacant Officer positions, so let's try and fill them!

On a Personal Note, "A Very Big Thank You" to all our members for your support. I thoroughly enjoyed my year, very much appreciated.

Finally, I give Robin Mackay all my best wishes for a successful 2019/20 Chairmanship and know he will enjoy as much as I have, and we will have another great year.
